Industrial Grade Diatomaceous Earth – Comprehensive Technical Manual
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a premium functional mineral derived from fossilized diatom remains, widely known as the “Natural Micro Sieve” for its unique porous microstructure. Unlike conventional inert fillers, DE delivers controllable porosity, large specific surface area, and stable chemical inertness, making it indispensable in modern industrial manufacturing.
1. Formation and Microstructural Characteristics
Diatomite originates from long term deposition of amorphous silica frustules of diatoms. Under electron microscopy, DE displays a highly ordered honeycomb structure with uniform micro pores and interconnected channels. This natural framework guarantees high permeability, large internal surface area, and structural stability under industrial filtration pressure.

2. Core Physical and Chemical Properties
- Specific Surface Area & Porosity: Standard industrial grades reach 30–70 m²/g, supporting strong liquid adsorption and gasphase contact.
- Permeability Control: Graded by Darcy value; fine grades for high clarity, wide grades for high flow rate.
- Thermal Resistance: Melting point 1400–1650°C, suitable for refractories and thermal insulation.
- Low Thermal Conductivity: Hollow structure provides excellent heat insulation performance.
- Reinforcement: Irregular particle shape creates mechanical interlocking in polymers, enhancing rigidity and dimensional stability.
3. Main Industrial Applications
3.1 High Precision Solid Liquid Filtration
Applied in chemical plating solutions, sulfuric acid, industrial oil purification; also used in biopharmaceutical processes including plasma, vaccine, and antibiotic filtration.
3.2 High Performance Construction Materials
Used in lightweight concrete to lower density and improve heat insulation and fire resistance. As a pozzolanic additive in special mortars to enhance longterm strength and durability.
3.3 Functional Additives in Coatings and Plastics
Used as matting agent to adjust gloss without influencing color. As antiblocking agent for PE/PP films to prevent adhesion during production and storage.
3.4 Environmental Treatment
Efficient adsorbent for heavy metal ions (Cr, Pb, Cu) in wastewater via physical adsorption and ion exchange.
4. Product Grade Selection for Global Trade
- Natural Air Dried Grade: High activity, ideal for agriculture and pest control.
- Calcined Grade (Pink/Orange): Treated at 800–1000°C, suitable for medium speed filtration and filling.
- Flux Calcined Grade (White): High purity and flow rate, designed for heavy duty industrial filtration.
5. Our Advantages
High amorphous silica, low crystalline silica content, compliant with OSHA and REACH. Stable particle size distribution (D50/D90) ensures consistent production performance. Supported by ISO9001, RoHS, REACH, and patent certifications.
