Simple Guide to Raw Material Processing and Production Process of Natural Bentonite Cat Litter for Pet Cleaning

Time : 2026-08-03
Bentonite cat litter is the most popular pet cleaning product in the global pet market, famous for fast clumping, strong water absorption and excellent deodorizing performance. Many buyers and pet users only know its good using effect, but do not understand its production principle and manufacturing process. High-quality bentonite cat litter is not simply crushed ore powder. It is produced through strict raw material selection, multiple purification, fine grinding, particle shaping, fragrance treatment and drying screening. Every production step is designed to ensure low dust, fast clumping, strong deodorization and safe contact for cats. This article explains the complete manufacturing process of bentonite cat litter in simple and easy-to-understand words.
The first core step is high-quality raw material selection and natural purification. The performance of bentonite cat litter fundamentally depends on the quality of original bentonite ore. Manufacturers select high-purity natural bentonite ore with dense molecular structure and strong adsorption capacity. The selected raw ore has high viscosity and excellent water absorption activity, which is the basic guarantee for fast clumping performance. Impurities, soil blocks and inferior miscellaneous materials mixed in the original ore are completely removed in the early stage. This pure raw material screening step effectively avoids problems such as poor clumping, excessive dust and weak deodorization of finished cat litter, ensuring stable basic performance of subsequent products.
The second step is raw material crushing and fine grinding. The screened pure bentonite ore is sent to professional crushing equipment for primary crushing to turn large ore blocks into uniform small particles. After preliminary crushing, the materials are further finely ground into superfine powder. This ultra-fine grinding process makes the bentonite mineral structure fully loose and activates the internal porous adsorption structure. Fully ground bentonite powder has stronger water absorption and odor adsorption capacity, and can quickly absorb urine and lock odor molecules. This step lays a key foundation for the product’s fast clumping and deodorizing functions.

The third key process is particle shaping and granulation. Different from disordered powder, qualified cat litter needs uniform and round particles for comfortable stepping and low dust. The finely ground bentonite powder is sent to professional granulation equipment. Through physical rolling and shaping technology, the powder is rolled into regular round particles with consistent size. The particle diameter is precisely controlled within the most suitable range for cat use. Round particles prevent sharp edges from hurting cat paws, and standardized particle size avoids excessive fine dust or oversized particles that affect clumping efficiency. This step determines the touch, dust degree and appearance quality of finished cat litter.
The fourth step is high-temperature drying and structural stabilization. Newly shaped wet particles contain certain moisture and are easy to break and powder. All semi-finished particles are sent through a continuous high-temperature drying system to remove internal excess water. Reasonable constant temperature drying does not damage the mineral activity of bentonite. Instead, it solidifies the internal porous structure of particles, making the particles firm, wear-resistant and not easy to powder during cat scratching and daily use. Dried cat litter has stable physical properties, no moisture agglomeration, and maintains long-term dry and active water absorption capacity during storage and use.
The fifth process is fragrance addition and deodorization treatment. For scented bentonite cat litter, safe pet-grade mild fragrance is evenly sprayed and infiltrated on the surface and shallow layer of dry particles. Adopting slow-release fragrance locking technology, the fragrance ingredients are firmly attached to the bentonite pores. This method avoids strong sudden odor, realizes long-term uniform fragrance volatilization, and neutralizes pet excrement odor continuously. All added fragrances are non-irritating and harmless, which will not affect cat’s respiratory health or cause smell resistance, improving indoor fresh-keeping effect while ensuring product safety.

The sixth core step is multi-layer screening and dust removal. After drying and fragrance treatment, the cat litter will have a small amount of fine powder and broken particles produced by friction. The finished materials pass through multi-stage vibrating screening equipment to screen out oversized particles, fine powder and broken defective materials. Only complete and uniform round particles are retained. Professional dust removal equipment thoroughly removes floating dust on the particle surface, realizing ultra-low dust effect. This process solves the common pain points of flying dust, dirty cat fur and indoor dust pollution of ordinary cat litter.
The final step is quality inspection and automatic packaging. All finished cat litter will pass strict sampling inspection, including water absorption speed, clumping firmness, dust content, fragrance uniformity and particle hardness. Products that meet all performance standards are sent to automatic packaging machines for quantitative sealing and packaging. The whole production process adopts physical processing without harmful chemical additives, ensuring that the finished bentonite cat litter is safe, non-toxic, environmentally friendly and suitable for long-term use by cats of all ages.
