Precipitated Barium Sulfate in Resin Coatings: Benefits & Applications

Precipitated barium sulfate (BaSO₄) is a high purity, synthetic functional filler widely used in solvent based, water based, and powder resin coatings. Produced by controlled chemical precipitation, it offers ultrafine particle size, narrow distribution, high whiteness, low oil absorption, and excellent chemical inertness. For resin systems (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, polyester), it delivers a balanced performance of gloss, durability, leveling, and cost efficiency.

Key Benefits in Resin Coatings

  • High purity & consistent quality: Purity ≥98% (often 98–99%), low impurities (no heavy metals), stable whiteness (95–98%).
  • Excellent dispersion & compatibility: Fine particles (typically 0.5–5 μm) and narrow distribution improve wetting with resins; reduces agglomeration, fisheyes, and craters.
  • Superior gloss & smoothness: High refractive index (~1.64) enhances gloss and DOI (distinctness of image); maintains high gloss even at high loading.
  • Enhanced mechanical properties: Increases coating hardness, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, and impact strength; improves film toughness.
  • Good weather & chemical resistance: Resists acid, alkali, UV, and aging; delays chalking, yellowing, and gloss loss—ideal for exterior and industrial coatings.
  • Low oil absorption & high loading: Oil absorption <20 g/100g allows higher filler loading, reduces resin consumption, and lowers cost; partial TiO₂ replacement possible.
  • Stable suspension & antisettling: Optimized particle size and surface treatment improve storage stability, reduce sedimentation and sagging.

Main Applications

  • Powder coatings: Improves leveling, gloss retention, and transfer efficiency; ensures uniform film thickness and smooth finish.
  • Automotive topcoats & clear coats: Delivers high gloss, DOI, and antiUV performance; reduces shrinkage and orange peel.
  • Industrial anti corrosion coatings (epoxy/PU): Enhances barrier properties, hardness, and chemical resistance for metal protection.
  • Architectural & water based coatings: Improves whiteness, hiding power, and weather resistance; compatible with latex and acrylic emulsions.
  • Printing inks & high gloss finishes: Provides uniform dispersion, high brightness, and printability.

Why Choose Precipitated Barium Sulfate for Resin Coatings?

Compared with natural barite (ground barium sulfate), precipitated grade provides higher purity, finer & more uniform particles, higher whiteness, and better dispersion. It is the preferred filler for highgrade resin coatings where consistent quality, smooth surface, and longterm durability are critical.
